My head's deep in Unfinished Book World. It made me think of this poem:
I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us - don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
-Emily Dickinson
Any other nobody's out there? We could form a club, and when we're famous and harried we can talk fondly of the days when all we were was a Nobody. Or maybe, if we're lucky, even if we ever do become Somebody, we can still be Nobody on the inside.
That's one of my favorite Dickinson poems. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll join your Nobody Club. I'm more comfortable being a Nobody than I would be as a Somebody, I think. I have a feeling if I ever do become a Somebody, it will only be a clever disguise, and my inner Nobody will always rule.
I have always felt like a Nobody. Let me know when the first Nobody Club meeting is! :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE Emily Dickinson. This was one of my favorite poems in high school.
ReplyDeleteGreat, Beth.
Oh, Geez! I thought at first you were reciting Shel Silverstein. I think mayhap I've made nobody into a fine personality trait for myself. I wouldn't know what to do if I were somebody, being a nobody seems to be ingrained in my status quo. (Hugs)Indigo
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely, Beth. I aspire to be nobody.
ReplyDeleteOh that Sean Ferrell, he's nobody....
ReplyDeleteI love that poem.
ReplyDeleteI also love the simple truth of this blog. Very nice.
Linda - Emily Dickinson is in a class by herself.
ReplyDeletePatty - Welcome, Nobody!
Harley - Thanks. I love E.D. too.
Indigo - I never liked Shel Silverstein as a kid. Maybe it's time to revisit him.
Sean - Thanks. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Janet - Who? I see nobody here.
Penelope - That's one of the best things you could say to me. Thanks.
A Dickinson classic & one I clung to as an awkward youth. Only in our children's eyes are we ever really "somebody" anyway.
ReplyDeleteAndre, that's both sobering and wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLovely, as always. I realize how much I miss your quiet presence every time you return from an absence.
ReplyDeleteI'm so down for this club, especially if we can always still have a little bit of nobody on the inside.;)
ReplyDeleteTrisha - goodness. Thank you. I like that you're blogging more too.
ReplyDeleteJessica - you get it!
Yes, please. Me too. The nothingness will be grand with all of these amazing nobodies.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we're all set to be be a pair of nobodies with the same name and all! Hi Elisabeth, I'm Elisabeth! :)
ReplyDeleteMisty - indeed! I'm going to think up a secret code word.
ReplyDeleteElisa...beth.... whoa. That was disorienting. Hi!
Yeah me too. I googled me and got you.
ReplyDeleteI'm attempting to write a book also. you are much further along than me!
What a fabulous post! In addition to the reminder of one of my favorite Dickinson poems, I'm all over the 'being nobody' concept.
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad to have found your blog (via the elegantly shark-like Janet Reid) and will visit often. You have a lyrical and sparse way with words that I appreciate.
Thank you Pamala. I'm glad you stopped by.
